In Jason’s book, Antarctica: A Different Adventure, he describes his trip to the very heart of the most inhospitable place on Earth ……  Philadelphia.

That can't be right, let’s see, errrr it’s Antarctica.

With mountaineer Peter Hillary and mate Jason Veale, JK spent the toughest and most exhilarating days of his life tracing the steps of the great explorers of the ‘Heroic Age’, hauling sledges across the Horseshoe Valley on the edge of the Ellsworth Mountains.

This is a surprising place for Jason to find himself in, as he has a personal commitment to the horizontal lifestyle and his personal mantra has always been the Oz expression “She’ll be right”.

(For non-Australian’s, that means trusting in blind luck, mixed with child-like optimism).

But in the big A, JK found this fantasy approach would not suffice!

Reality hit from the beginning of the 9 month period of preparation, with its daunting exercise regime and then on to the ice itself, with its piercing polar winds, backbreaking sledging and horrific group farting while tent-bound.

Enough of this gibberish, this really is a fine book and is very different (and better) than the vast majority exped efforts which are only readable if you were actually on the trip yourself and are in the photos to look tough to impress chicks.

In Antarctica: A Different Adventure, Jason shoots a mean pic and tells the story about some good guys on a great trip in a hell of a place.

But don’t totally fall for his line “I’m just a cold-weather bumbly”.

He’s actually been up Anconcagua and really high on Denali.
